About the UKCGC

History

In October 2003, the then NHS Information Authority announced a new national organisation specifically for Caldicott Guardians working in Health and Social Care. Following the announcement a small group of guardians from health and social care organisations worked on a constitution for the national group, which launched in 2005 as the United Kingdom Council of Caldicott Guardians, under the chairmanship of Stephen Hinde, then Caldicott Guardian for BUPA.

At its inauguration, the Council was sponsored by the National Programme for IT (NPfIT). Subsequently its sponsors were Connecting for Health, which later became the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). Since 2015 the Council has been under the wing of the National Data Guardian (NDG), and is presently a subgroup of the National Data Guardian's Panel

The Caldicott Guardian register

All organisations which are required to have a Caldicott Guardian should ensure their up-to-date details are on the Caldicott Guardian Register.

The register is maintained by NHS Digital to store and update Caldicott Guardians’ details, and is used by by the Council to facilitate contact and dissemination of information.

If you are a Caldicott Guardian please check that your details are correct on the register. You can download a copy here (Excel spreadsheet)
