Newsletter: May

Dear Caldicott Guardians,

I wanted to take a moment to remind you about our forthcoming annual conference and to announce the launch of our Caldicott Guardian evening masterclass series.

We offer other events, too. Did you know we also offer a ‘breakfast club’ networking event? And a few times a year, we run free training workshops; we don’t have any planned at the moment, but keep an eye on our website.

Finally, we have received many questions about implementing the National Data Guardian’s guidance on Caldicott Guardians. So we wanted to draw your attention to our information on this, including our set of FAQs and free e-learning.

Caldicott Guardian National Annual Conference 2023

This year, we are sponsoring the Healthcare Conferences UK’s annual national Caldicott Guardian conference, which is taking place in London (or online) on 23 May.

As part of this, we have helped to shape an interesting and varied agenda. The event brings together Caldicott Guardians to understand current issues, the national context, and debate and discuss issues they face in practice. UKCGC Chair Dr Arjun Dhillon and National Data Guardian Dr Nicola Byrne will be speaking. Find out more.

Some discounted rate tickets (£100) are still available if you use the promotional code HCUK100ukcgc at the checkout (on the second page of the online booking form). Note that discounts are not valid in conjunction with any other offer from the HC-UK Conferences group (including the credit card discount) and are for new bookings only. HCUK is unable to offer refunds on booked places.

Caldicott Guardian evening masterclasses

The UKCGC is beginning a series of free, online evening masterclasses (17:30-18:30) for

Caldicott Guardians and those performing the Caldicott function for their organisation. The classes aim to spread good practice and share ideas for practical implementation.

UKCGC Breakfast Club

This monthly breakfast club for Caldicott Guardians is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 08:00 to 09:00.

It is held virtually via MS Teams and can include relevant news updates, an opportunity to network with other Caldicott Guardians, case studies and the chance to ask questions you may be facing as a Caldicott Guardian.

Those wishing to attend should contact helen.dyer10@nhs.net.

Caldicott Guardian virtual workshops

These free virtual workshops are arranged by the UKCGC to inform and support Caldicott Guardians in their work.

Delegates are invited to examine some of the complex scenarios faced by Caldicott Guardians on the frontline of health and social care today.

Through case study examples – taken from the Caldicott Guardian forum and from delegates on the day – you will explore some of the difficult issues and requests that Caldicott Guardians are often asked to resolve.

Keep an eye on our website for news of upcoming workshops.

National Data Guardian guidance on Caldicott Guardians

In August 2021 the National Data Guardian (NDG) published guidance under her statutory powers about the appointment, role and responsibilities of Caldicott Guardians in respect of data processing activities undertaken within their organisations.

The guidance states that the organisations in scope should have a Caldicott Guardian (whether by appointment or other arrangements). It also provides a description of the role and says what organisations can do to better support them in delivering their duties.

Organisations were asked to implement the guidance by June 2023. As this date nears, we have been receiving many questions about it. We provide frequently asked questions about the guidance here. We also offer e-learning on the role of the Caldicott Guardian to support those who want to know more about the role, or for those new in post.

Data Security Awareness Training module update

The e-learning for healthcare (elfh) Data Security Awareness training module has recently been updated (March 2023). This training must be completed annually by all staff as part of the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT). You can access the elfh training here.
